RMS conference booth

On June 10th and 11th, RMS had the privilege of participating in the 2025 Milestones Conference, hosted at the beautiful campus of John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio. This annual event, presented by Milestones Autism Resources, which brings together families, professionals, educators and advocates from across the region.

One of their main goals is to promote a community in which autistic individuals reach their full potential as integrated members of society. In this way, their needs are supported while their abilities, strengths and voices are valued. Their mission is also to support individuals with developmental disabilities through education, resources and networking.

As an exhibitor, RMS proudly showcased our commitment to promoting independence through technology, especially through the use of Remote Support services. These services are a person-centered, innovative approach to care that is transforming the way supportive care is delivered across Ohio.

What Is Remote Support?

Remote Support is a technology-based service model that allows individuals with developmental disabilities to receive real-time, two-way communication from highly trained direct support professionals who are located off-site. These services use secure audio and video systems, motion sensors, and other assistive technology to ensure individuals are safe and supported in their homes—without requiring constant in-person staff presence.

At RMS, we believe that dignity, privacy, and autonomy are vital to living a meaningful life. That’s why we offer customized Remote Support solutions that give individuals greater control over their daily routines, while still ensuring their safety and well-being. This service is especially impactful for those who want to live more independently, or who may only need occasional assistance throughout the day or night.

Our Remote Support Specialists (RSPs) are not call center employees. They are fully certified DSPs through the Ohio department of developmental disabilities. They are trained on each person’s Individual Service Plan. This allows our RSPs to engage with the individuals that we serve in the same way as a traditional DSP.

Why the Milestones Conference Matters:

The Milestones Conference is more than just a gathering—it’s a celebration of progress. Every conversation, workshop, and exhibit is designed to promote inclusive practices and empower individuals with disabilities to live full, self-directed lives.

This year’s theme highlighted independent living and technology-forward solutions, aligning perfectly with RMS’s mission to lead in offering supportive services that honor both capability and choice. Visitors to our booth had the opportunity to explore how Remote Support can complement existing care models, reduce service gaps, and increase flexibility for families and providers alike.

Supporting Ohio’s Tech First Initiative:

The state of Ohio, through its Tech First Initiative, has been a leader in advancing technology as a primary support strategy for individuals with developmental disabilities. As the primary support strategy, this means that remote support is not just a backup service. The Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities recognizes that Remote Support can empower people to achieve greater independence, save on staffing resources, and open new possibilities for care.

As a provider, RMS is proud to be aligned with this vision. We continually update our service models and collaborate with partners across the state to ensure individuals and their families have access to the best in remote caregiving technology.

Looking Ahead:

We’re grateful to Milestones Autism Resources and John Carroll University for hosting such a dynamic and inclusive conference. The connections made and the conversations shared remind us why we do what we do.
