Using Remote Support technology

When many people hear the term remote support, they picture simple alarms or monitoring devices. At RMS, we know it’s far more than that. Remote support is about building trust, offering real human connection, and giving individuals the tools to live their most independent lives.

As a provider agency with over four decades of experience in delivering personalized care, we believe remote support services should go beyond being an alarm system. For us, it’s about creating real connections, fostering independence, and providing peace of mind for families. Our staff are highly trained professionals who use assistive technology to help individuals live independently — while ensuring support is available anytime it’s needed.

Redefining Remote Support:

Many remote support providers build their platforms primarily around safety and security. Alarms, alerts and monitoring features are important — and RMS includes them as a foundation. But we don’t stop there.

We designed our platform to support people in all aspects of daily living:

  • Helping someone get their laundry started.
  • Providing encouragement to try something new and fun.
  • Offering assistance on an average day — not just when something is going wrong.

At RMS, remote support is about the whole person, their goals, and how they want to live.

Remote Support & Ohio DODD:

The Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD) authorizes and oversees the use of remote support services, which rely on technology to track and respond to a person’s needs in real time while promoting greater independence.

In Ohio, this is treated as a “Technology First” solution, meaning it must be considered for people with disabilities before turning to more traditional, hands-on services such as Homemaker Personal Care (HPC).

Respecting Privacy While Offering Safety:

A common misconception is that remote support means less privacy. At RMS, the opposite is true. We never place cameras in private spaces such as bedrooms or bathrooms. Instead, we use discreet sensors when necessary — for example, to detect a fall risk or ensure safety in a certain area of the home.

Our remote support professionals are not sitting in a room watching live video feeds. They only respond to alerts, and only then may they briefly access a camera to ensure safety. We listen when people say, “I don’t want to be watched,” and we avoid over-monitoring. Our goal is not to know every detail of someone’s life — only to provide support where it’s needed.

Highly Trained Professionals — Not a Call Center:

One of the biggest differences between RMS and other providers is our staff. Every remote support professional is a Direct Support Professional (DSP) trained on each individual’s Individualized Service Plan (ISP). They are also certified to pass medications — the same as if they were in the home, except they are working remotely.

This training allows meaningful connections to develop between people receiving supports and their Remote Support Professionals (RSPs). Unlike a call center, our team is invested in the lives of the people we serve. They are there not only for emergencies, but to provide real, everyday support.

Technology That Connects, Not Replaces:

At the center of our system is the RMS device — the “brains” of the platform. It’s more than a monitoring tool. It’s an operations hub that makes connection easy:

  • Video or phone calls to loved ones and RSPs.
  • Medication reminders to stay on track.
  • To-do lists for daily routines.
  • Simple games and radio stations for enrichment and fun.

Features like a green “live” button let individuals know when an RSP is available for a real-time video chat, bringing peace of mind and a human touch to the technology.

Peace of Mind:

For families, RMS remote support means confidence and comfort. Loved ones can rest easier knowing their family member isn’t alone and has trained professionals available 24/7. It’s not just alarms and alerts — it’s people who care.

At RMS, we believe remote support should never feel distant. It should feel like connection, security, and independence working hand in hand. We’re proud of the way RMS remote supports help people thrive, giving families peace of mind while empowering individuals to live their best lives.
