At Team RMS, we are dedicated to providing exceptional care and support to individuals with developmental disabilities across the state of Ohio. Our commitment to innovation and improving the quality of life for our clients drives us to constantly explore new ways to serve our community better.
We are thrilled to announce the launch of our latest service offering: Remote Support services.
What is Remote Support:
In May 2018, Ohio enacted the Technology First act through executive order. This positioned Ohio as a pioneering state for prioritizing and expanding access to technology for individuals with developmental disabilities. This executive order mandates collaboration between the department and county boards of developmental disabilities to ensure that technology is integrated into all service and support plans.
Rather than being a technology-exclusive policy, the order aims to educate individuals on leveraging technology to enhance their quality of life, promoting greater independence and personal freedom. This supportive technology, designed to assist individuals in performing tasks or providing remote care, encompasses two key services: Assistive Technology and Remote Support.
Remote Support is an innovative service designed to provide people with developmental disabilities, the assistance they need — no matter where they live. Leveraging cutting-edge assistive technology, remote support enables RMS to virtually deliver high-quality care and support. This is done while simultaneously ensuring an individual’s safety, independence and overall well-being.
How Does Remote Support Work?
At Team RMS, our Remote Support services utilize a range of assistive technologies to monitor and assist clients in real-time. These technologies include:
- Smart Home Devices: Sensors and automated systems that help monitor daily activities and ensure a safe living environment.
- Communication Tools: Video conferencing and messaging platforms that enable instant communication between individuals and support staff.
- Remote Monitoring Systems: Tools that allow caregivers to monitor people’s well-being remotely, ensuring they receive the care they need promptly.
Benefits of Remote Support:
Remote support services are specifically designed to help individuals with developmental disabilities gain more independence. They become more empowered and less reliant on in-home caregivers.
- Enhanced Safety: With continuous monitoring and immediate response capabilities, Remote Support ensures that clients are safe and secure at all times.
- Increased Independence: By leveraging assistive technology, clients can maintain a higher level of independence while still receiving the support they need.
- Improved Access to Care: Remote Support eliminates geographical barriers, allowing us to extend our services to clients in even the most remote locations.
- Personalized Support: Our team can tailor support plans to meet the unique needs of each client, ensuring they receive the most effective care.

Getting Started with Remote Support:
In Ohio, here are the five general steps for gaining access to remote support services:
- Engage in a discussion to understand why an individual with a developmental disability utilizes direct care staff and determine if their health and safety needs can be addressed remotely.
- Conduct a team meeting involving the individual receiving services, their providers, and the service and support administrator to discuss which needs can be met remotely, the hours for remote support, and how backup support will be managed.
- If the individual opts for remote support, the provider responsible for backup support will select the vendor for the necessary technology and equipment. If the backup support is provided by unpaid natural supports, such as family or neighbors; the individual or their guardian will choose the vendor.
- The service and support administrator collaborates with the team to update the individual service plan (ISP) to include detailed protocols for the new remote support.
- An ISP that incorporates remote support should provide backup support contact information and instructions on what to do if the individual wishes to deactivate the remote support equipment.
